At Temple Beth Or, we have organized our religious school into an innovative Sunday morning camp-like educational program that we call Makor. We also offer a Hebrew School program designed especially to prepare our young members for becoming a bar or bat mitzvah.

Our Makor program opens with a specially-designed educational session in which students work to develop a strong understanding of core Jewish concepts. The curriculum rotates among three lenses through which classes examine what it means to be Jewish:

The People of Israel: am yisrael (2016-17)

The Land of Israel: eretz yisrael (2017-18)

The Scripture of Israel: torat yisrael (2018-19)

We will cycle through these lenses every three years in order to teach about Judaism from every possible angle. Any topic can be analyzed through this framework and each lens – and grade level – will yield different insights.

Sundays also include opportunities for our students to explore the lighter side of Jewish culture. We have electives, or chugim, in which our students learn more about Jewish aspects of cooking, music, art and more.

Hebrew School

At Temple Beth Or, students begin learning Hebrew as third graders. These years mark the beginning of our students’ traditional Hebrew education culminating in their bar or bat mitzvah ceremonies. Each year builds upon the previous, setting the foundation of Jewish pride and knowledge in our youth.

For the 2017-18 school year, Hebrew School will be held on Sundays. Makor will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided for those staying for Hebrew School from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Hebrew school is required for grades 3 through 6 and is included in the fee schedule below.
